Rose Garden

Holkham Hall walled garden again – I thought the roses had survived pretty well given the hot weather of the last couple of months. I don’t know if they were fragranced varieties, but in the afternoon heat they seemed to have very little scent.

The rhapsody in blue rose was an intense blue purple that escaped the colour range of my camera but was a surprising find.

Summer Scents

Walled garden, Holkham Hall, Norfolk. Currently undergoing restoration and full of colour and variety. I was walking round in the humid summer warmth, breathing in all the complex musky undertones of herbs and roses rising from the massive borders and high walled garden rooms.

Parts of the garden reminded me of Chartwell in Kent, for those who know it, though Holkham is not NT. There is a modest separate charge for walled garden entry.
