…Some surprisingly lifelike taxidermy in a shop in Pickering, North Yorkshire.
Lovely to look at but a bit off-putting to see a Jay take a young bluebird on the wing.
Jays are apparently vulnerable to night owls, birds of prey – and taxidermists.
I once heard a story of a taxidermist who picked up a lifeless owl he found frozen in the snow near his house.
He placed it in his specimen fridge with the collection of other birds and small rodents he planned to stuff. Some time later he returned and opened the fridge door to find the fridge empty – apart from a number of owl pellets and a stuffed owl blinking in the dark.
